Book Review: The Incredible value of Employee Power

I just started reading Organizational Psychology recently and that’s when Book Tasters have offered me the “Employee Power” book for a review. The title grabbed my attention immediately and decided to read this book. But at the same time, I was thinking that it’s going to be another dry book like the other psychology or management books that I read to date.

Book Blurb:

This is a book about the incredible source of largely untapped power which exists within organisations and companies today, namely your employees. It explains why this is the case and what to do about it. The main paradigm of the book is that employees are the most important resource for any organisation and should be treated as such; companies need more than ever to become employee centric. Both now and in the future, key themes such as autonomy, empowerment and employee engagement will become the foundations upon which companies will build competitive advantage. Building confidence and trust will become more and more crucial to success. As I say in the book:“Empowerment is also to do with confidence and trust. If you think about the concepts of confidence and trust in your life outside of work, I am sure that most of you would agree that, if there is no trust within, for example, a family unit, there is a great likelihood that this will lead to a serious problem.”

My thoughts on “Employee Power”

Employees are the basic assets of any company. But, unfortunately, that fact is being easily forgotten by the companies, while they start treating the Customers as Gods. But the customers would return back to them, only if that company’s employees treat the customers well. And employees will be treating customers only if they get the due recognition and awards. That means they need to be happy as well as feel proud to be working there in that company. This book stresses that factor once again with the correct examples cited.

This book really empowers both the employees as well as the companies by stating the dire facts which are needed in a company to keep its employees happy and satisfied. This book captures all the tiny points also to shift the company from being customer-centric to employee-centric. The author (Mr. Stewart) has used his long experience in the hospitality industry to put forward very valid points about employees and their satisfaction levels. In fact, his growth from the cleaner to the manager in the same industry has given him different perspectives about the same points. And this has come out well in his book. For example, some managers think that we don’t have to pay loyal people, as they are not going anywhere else. He tells what is the pitfall with this thinking as below:

“Whether or not employees feel good, bad or indifferent with organizations, they all represent golden opportunities in terms of building employee power”
