Book Review: The Itsy Bitsy Spyder by Apeskha Rao

An interesting mystery and spy thriller with a teenage girl as the main protagonist is a wonderful combination. I am pulled into this book, The Itsy Bitsy Spyder, right from the first page as Samira (Sam) got me hooked with her quirky, out-of-the-box humor and thinking.

My Review of Itsy Bitsy Spyder

This novel is very refreshing and fresh in the YA spy thrillers genre. Once, I picked it up on Kindle, I just couldn’t put it down till the end. I was searching for more pages of this book towards the end, as I didn’t feel like putting it down. So many questions are left unanswered; maybe they would be handled in a sequel. But waiting for the sequel has become a dampener if you may put it across so.

Samira (preferred to be called Sam) is a typical teenager but from not so a regular family with a familiar background. She has been trained to be a spy by her own family members so that she would look at everything in life with a different set of eyes.

So, Sam is fighting a two-sided battle when compared to the other typical teenagers. She needs to protect her family and pose a normal facade outside, adding fuel to the identity crisis that any regular teenager would have.

The author weaves the story beautifully with lots of personal episodes from Sam’s life, which give the feeling that Sam is gearing up for bigger adventures. The attitude Sam displays throughout the novel is like any other typical teenager. She is amply supported by her quirky and not-so-typical grandmother. This book is peppered with lots of quotes that are funny but catchy at the same time. The best I liked are:

“I wanted Samira to grow up on stories of women who refused to wait for a stupid prince to find them, especially since modern princes can barely find their own bums without GPS. I wanted her to grow up on stories of women who had tried to change the world so that one day she could go out and do exactly that.”

Don’t you think most of the parents of this generation can agree to the above quote?
