Transcript for the episode “Mommy – I am Bored”

This episode talks about how to handle your children when they constantly complain that they are bored.

Hello Friends, welcome back to the ASK A FRIEND SERIES in the Simplified Parenting and Emotionally Healthy Child Podcast show. I am your host Suhasini from Mommyshravmusings.

In today’s episode, we’ll address a common concern among parents: when their kids constantly complain that they are bored. They keep calling Mommy, Mommy, or Daddy, Daddy the whole time and wouldn’t let you finish your work in peace and wouldn’t wait to.

Who wouldn’t like to get bored and chill out for a while, my dear friends? All of us are in a chasing mood of completing one task after the other, and we don’t get time to sit down and relax. Getting Bored and chilling out without doing anything is the best part of one’s life. And during that time only we will get the best ideas.

So that means, Boredom as an emotion is not bad. And getting bored once in a while is suitable for everyone, including kids.

So that means the problem is not about your child getting bored, but about them coming and disturbing you. So let’s first understand why your children are saying that they are bored:

1.      Your child’s routine has become so structured and monotonous that they are not getting any surprises in day-to-day life.

Here Surprise elements mean – not the gifts or the goodies, my dear friends – they don’t have any new experiences or ways to engage them.

2.      They depended heavily on external stimulation like gadgets to engage them. Hence they are not able to do or play anything without devices.

3.      They don’t have any time for unstructured downtime or play time to unwind and relax with their peers and friends.

4.      As they don’t have any unplanned downtime, they are not even confident enough to invent games they can play independently without any adult intervention.

So how can we help in this situation?

a.       First, we need to give them that downtime away from gadgets in the nearby parks or play areas, where they can physically play, by setting up proper limits on screen time.

b.      Provide them with age-appropriate open-ended toys like puzzles and blocks so that they can start spending time on their own.

c.       Ask them to determine their interests and what they want to do?
